Important dates

November 11: Remembrance day

Every year on November 11, Canadians pause in a silent moment of remembrance for the men and women who have served and continue to serve our country during times of war, conflict and peace.

Woman Abuse Prevention Month

67% of Canadians know a Women who has been a victim of abuse. This month Canadians are wearing purple to show support in the ending of abuse towards women and is a symbol of the courage it takes a woman to leave her abuser. However, the courage of the woman is not enough. It takes the strength of an entire community to end violence against women. With the COVID-19 lockdowns, abuse rates have drastically increased, making it more important than ever that we show our support and put an end to human rights violations.

News

1st HIV self-test approved in Canada

Researchers are launching a study on HIV self-testing kits with the aim of gaining federal approval for the first such device in Canada. As of 2016, there were more than 63,000 Canadians living with HIV, one in seven of whom were unaware of their condition, according to estimates released by the Public Health Agency of Canada last year. HIV is especially prevalent in the LGBTQ+ community and access to these resources is often hard to access due to risks of shaming or being outed by doctors or other health care professionals, due to COVID-19 testing for HIV has dropped even more. But these new self-testing kits can offer safe, anonymous testing kits that can hopefully encourage more testing for this potentially deadly disease.

Delaware elects nation’s first openly transgender state senator

The American election has been an emotional drain on everyone from the stress and mud being thrown around. But a ray of light has come through in the form of Sarah McBride, a democrat trans-right activist who has just become the highest-ranking openly transgender person in U.S history. In all the hard times this election has brought, we see trailblazers pushing us forward and leading us to a better future.
