You Are More Than Your Body: 30+ Evidence-Based Strategies for Living Well with Chronic Illness Book Review
You Are More Than Your Body: 30+ Evidence-Based Strategies for Living Well with Chronic Illness by Dr. Jennifer Caspari combines her clinical knowledge with her lived experience of disability and chronic illness. She draws on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and mindfulness to explore coping skills, emotional regulation, and self-compassion. I appreciated that the book is not focused only on productivity. Many self-help books seem to take a “just do it” approach, but Caspari recognizes the importance of pacing yourself, saying no, and allowing yourself to rest. This made her advice feel compassionate and realistic.
The discussion of flexible thinking was particularly meaningful to me. Caspari’s reminder that “unhelpful isn’t bad” separates an unhelpful thought or behaviour from a moral judgment. I understood this as an invitation to recognize what is not serving us without blaming ourselves for struggling. Similarly, the idea that “the present is the result of dozens of past variables” encouraged me to think more compassionately about why people respond differently to similar challenges.
Caspari brings these ideas together with the line, “While it is true that there are many things in life we cannot control, and many barriers we must overcome, it is also true that how we relate to our thoughts and feelings and the behaviours we choose to engage in can have a big impact on our daily lives and quality of life”. This balance acknowledges real barriers while showing that self-compassion and personal choice can still improve our quality of life.
