The Federal Government is planning to make cuts to the Interim Federal Health Program, meaning that refugee and asylum seekers will be forced to pay out-of-pocket for essential health care that had previously been covered. Starting May 1st, for the first time in the program’s almost 70-year history, refugees will face a $4 fee every time they pick up a prescription, and a 30% co-payment on dental, vision, counseling, and other supplemental care. These costs will mean that people will have to choose between rent, groceries, or medicine. In too many cases, this will result in people delaying care, worsening health complications, and more serious cases in our ERs. If you haven't yet, I recommend contacting your MP to get their support in stopping the cuts.
