The Witch of Willow Sound Book Review

The Witch of Willow Sound is a novel by Vanessa F. Penney published by ECW Press. Fade Luck, a woman down on her luck, finds out that her estranged aunt, Madeline, is missing. Fade goes to Madeline’s cottage in the woods and is determined to find her before anyone else does. To do so, she must brave the village of Grand Tea – a place full of rumours, secrets, and myths, where the citizens believe Madeline is the Witch of Willow Sound. Readers should be advised that this book contains themes of forced institutionalization, child abuse, and homophobia. It is perfect for anyone looking to read a modern gothic, feminist mystery with a strong, determined female protagonist. This book is inspired by East Coast traditions and Nova Scotian witch lore, which makes the plot intriguing, complex, and hard to put down! This book was my first gothic novel, and I found myself invested in the extensive backstory of Madeline Luck and her family, as well as shocked by the extreme rumours and propaganda spread in Willow Sound. I found myself rooting for Fade throughout the book, and loved the supportive and fun friendship she formed with Nish, the town historian. I was somewhat let down by the ending, but am hopeful that a sequel is coming!
